Cancer of the testicles is rare, but it is the most common form of cancer in males aged from 15 – 50 years of age. However it is affecting more males each year.

Problems in the trouser department are on the increase due to men’s lack of knowledge or awareness on the importance of testicular self examination (T.S.E). Surveys suggest that many males are unaware of what to do when self examining and what to look out for. So here’s our guide to self examination.

It is recommended to check yourself at least once a month. Do this in the shower or after a hot bath, when the scrotal skin is relaxed.

How To Check

Firstly look in the mirror at your balls, get to know them. The size, shape of each testicle. Remember we are all different so get to know yours!

Hold the scrotal skin in the palms of your hands.

Examine one testicle at a time.

Use both hands to gently roll each testicle (with slight pressure) between your fingers.

Place your thumbs over the top of the testicle and gently roll. You should be able to feel the epididymis (sperm carrying tube) which feels soft, rope-like, and slightly tender to pressure. This is a normal lump at the back of each testicle.

Remember it is normal to have one testicle larger than the other.

What To Look For

• A hard lump (pea or rice shaped) in size on the front or sides of your testicle.

• Swelling or enlargement of a testicle.

• An increase in firmness

• Pain or discomfort or a heavy feeling in the scrotum.

• A dull ache or an unusual difference between one testicle and the other.

• The critical issue is looking for changes in consistency and areas of hardening or swelling, which are usually painless.

Do A Regular Check Every Month!

Do not allow your natural embarrassment to delay discussing this with your doctor. Remember early detection is the key to a better outcome as in most cases testicular cancer is easy to treat when detected early.
